Writing a grandmother’s obituary can feel like a big task – often, their lives are full and have a large roster of connected individuals. That being said, it’s certainly an achievable task that, with a little time and planning, can result in something quite beautiful. Following are some examples and obituary templates that you can use when writing an obituary for your grandmother, as well as suggestions for quotes and poems you may want to include in the obituary.

Obituary quotes for a grandmother

When selecting quotes to include in an obituary, it’s helpful to consider a few things before landing on your final choices. Some questions that can help you narrow down your choices include: Who were your grandma’s favorite artists, authors, singers, or writers? Did she have any favorite books, movies, songs, or other media she enjoyed immensely? What were some of her sayings or witticisms you heard from her? These questions can help you narrow down your options and select something that’s meaningful to her memory specifically. However, doing this isn’t always possible and may still leave you wanting something else. If that’s the case, consider some of these quotes to include in your grandmother’s obituary:

“There is no other love that’s as special as the love of a grandma. / So warm and fuzzy, so calm and sweet, so cheerful and joyful.” - Hopal Green “Grandmothers are a gift not to be taken lightly." - Nikita Gill "Grandma always made you feel she had been waiting to see just you all day and now the day was complete." - Marcy DeMaree "Grandmothers and roses are much the same. Each is a God's masterpiece with different names." - Unknown "Parent-child relationships are complex. Grandmother-grandchild relationships are simple. Grandmas are short on criticism and long on love." - Janet Lanese "Grandmas never run out of hugs or cookies." - Unknown "A grandma is warm hugs and sweet memories. She remembers all of your accomplishments and forgets all of your mistakes." - Barbara Cage "Grandmother: A wonderful mother with lots of practice." - Unknown "Grandmothers are voices of the past and role models of the present. Grandmother obituary poems

An obituary offers a space for you to honor your grandmother’s life in a way that feels right for you and your family. Many find that including quotes or poems is a perfect way to communicate their thoughts on their grandmother and how much she meant to them or what their relationship was like. If you don’t already have a poem in mind (perhaps one she loved or read to you often), these are some poems that are specifically about grandmothers and the roles they play in the lives of many:

“When I Must Leave You” by Helen Steiner Rice

When I must leave you
For a little while
Please do not grieve
And shed wild tears
Never, never
Be afraid to die
For I am waiting for you in the sky!

“Warning” by Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals and say we’ve no money for butter.

“A Tear for Nana” by J. Allen Shaw

Grandmother, when I think about you being gone,
My heart is saddened, and I don’t know how I’ll go on.
You always had time to listen to my complaints,
I’ve said so many times, “That woman’s a saint.”
You taught me more about life than anyone at all.
And were always available, anytime I would call.
I shed a tear because my “Nana’s” was gone.
Now somehow I’ll find the strength to go on.

“The Watcher” by Anne Widdemer

Her thoughts were all so full of us,
She could never forget!
And so I think that where she is
She must still be watching yet.

Obituaries tend to be long and often cost hundreds of dollars when posted in the newspaper – but this isn’t the only way to share an obituary. If you’ve lost someone and are wanting to share their story with your community, consider setting up a memorial website on Ever Loved. Ever Loved memorial websites give you a space to post an obituary, share event details, collect memories, and raise money towards expenses or charitable causes. They’re also entirely free!
