How to get started writing an obituary
Writing an obituary can feel like a big task, but breaking it down into steps can help you create a thoughtful tribute. Here’s a guide to get you started:
1. Start with the basics
- Include the full name of the person, any nicknames, and their age.
- Mention the date and place of their passing.
2. Give background on their life
- Share where they were born and raised, their education, career, and major life milestones.
- Include personal details that made them unique, like hobbies, passions, and favorite activities.
3. Highlight their relationships
- List family members (spouse, children, grandchildren, siblings) and close friends.
- If appropriate, mention predeceased family members, especially if they had a significant influence.
4. Share their values and legacy
- Describe what they were known for, what they believed in, or what made them special to the community.
- This could include achievements, volunteering, or how they impacted others' lives.
5. Mention funeral or memorial details
- If the obituary is going to be public, include information about funeral or memorial services.
- If donations are preferred in lieu of flowers, provide details about how people can contribute.
6. Add a personal touch
- Conclude with a meaningful sentence or two. This could be a favorite quote, a family saying, or a sentiment about their legacy.
7. Edit and review
- Read it over and share with a family member or close friend to ensure it captures the essence of your loved one.
Where can I share the obituary once I've posted it?
Obituaries were typically shared through the newspaper -- it functioned as a way to alert both creditors and community that someone had died. The downside to newspaper publications include a few factors, but primarily were reach and cost. Obituaries in the newspaper had to be relatively short -- they were often priced by the line. Each sentence would increase the total cost of the print, which often cost at least a few hundred dollars.
Nowadays, publishing an obituary is easier than ever. Many folks choose to post their obituary online through the use of memorial websites, such as Ever Loved. This offers a space to write an obituary that's as long (or as short) as you want and gives you the opportunity to share additional details and information alongside the obituary (such as event details, photos, and more).
Ever Loved memorial websites also give you the option of collecting donations towards a cause of your choice, which is incredibly helpful for families who are choosing to raise donations towards a charitable cause or are seeking support from their community in covering unexpected funeral expenses. By publishing an obituary online, you make it easily accessible, easily editable, and combine it with a ton of other resources and information folks may be seeking after someone passes away.
Standard obituaries
A standard obituary is a way to give an overview and story of someone’s life after they’ve passed away. Standard obituaries usually include all of the standard details of someone’s life (date of birth, death, those they’re survived by, etc.) but it also gives an overview of what they’ve accomplished and were passionate about in their life. People will often write about how they affected communities around them or other people that were close to them, how their families came to be, what was important to them in their free time, etc. If you’re looking for a more in depth overview of what to include in an obituary, please reference our article on How to Write an Obituary.

It can be beneficial to use an obituary writing template, since it can be difficult to capture someone's life in a single obituary, especially while grieving. An obituary can help acknowledge and announce the death so that a community may come together, commemorate a life well lived, and provide a community with ways that they can participate in celebrating the life of a loved one. The best obituaries aren’t ones that are published in the most well-known newspapers. Rather, obituaries that are written well and from the heart leave the biggest impact.
